Buying two Cockatiels..?

So my brother and I are planning on buying a Tiel for each of us. However, we want them to bond to us, not to each other. How would the caging work out? Can we keep them in the same room, just in different cages? Or would we have to put them in different areas of the house?

Also, if you have any other suggestions for a beginning bird for me, it would be very much appreciated also :)
