Buying a new phone....Tmobile dash...questions...?

Okay, so I'm looking to buy a new phone from eBay (the T-Mobile Dash) and it is the older version, but I am afraid that if I get it, I will have to buy a data plan. If I were to buy it, and put my sim card in it and not use any of the internet functions... would I have to buy a data plan?? Thanks for any help...
