Buying a new camera for photography purposes?

Ok so I have an interest in photography, but I have been using a digital Fuji Film Camera. It works nice, but most of the time it doesn't look perfect. So I was thinking of getting something more pro, like an SLR or a DSLR. I'm good with photography and taking pictures, now I need a camera to follow in my footsteps. Which one is best for me and if you could, describe the difference between SLR and DSLR
