Buying a Ducati is like getting a tattoo...

Once you buy your first Ducati you are hooked. It is the same feeling that you get when you get your first tattoo. You are excited and show it off to everyone. After a while you want more and more. I have both and so I have this feeling constantly. Maybe one day the number of Ducatis I will own will match the number of tattoos that I already have.

Now back to this feeling... So maybe it is the thrill of owning a exotic machine or maybe it is the feel of riding it. No matter what year Ducati a person owns, people's heads turnand you will always get compliments and questions (of course this is as long as your Ducati is in good shape). It is an amazing feeling when you are riding down the highway and you notice the person driving the Bentley admiring your Ducati as you are admiring their $300k Bentley.

The other part of this feeling comes from the ride and sound of the Ducati. No matter how many Japanese bikes I have ridden, the Duc has that distinct feel to it. It is sturdy, quick, nimble, and responsive. You get some of this feel from some of the Japanese bike, but it is not the same. The powerful sound that comes from your Duc as you open the throttle up more and the pull from double to triple digits makes your heart beat faster. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy hitting the twisties with my CBR 600RR too, but the DUc just amplifies the fun. Out of a group of bikes you will always know when there is a Duc amongst them (even if there are other twins present).

So my basic conclusion is that I will never buy another Japanese bike as long as there are good Ducatis out there for decent prices. I might buy an Aprilia or MV if I want to experience a different kind of European bike.

Could not agree with you more. I love my 999. You can'y mistaken it for anything else on the road. I also like seeing people's head turn as soon as I accelerate. I am in the process now of looking for minor upgrades to the bike to add on. It normally takes me a while since I am picky. lol!

Perhaps, but as much as I see Ducs for sale with very low mileage, I gather either the people that buy them either can't afford them or rather they chose to 'lease' them.

I think some people just bite off more than they can chew. They see the nice Ducati, but do not realize that it requires some experience to ride. Some people think they are like the 4 cyl bikes and try to ride like that. They get scared off the bike and turn around and sell it. My bike had 150 miles on it when I purcahsed it in 2008. On top of that , I have to agree that some people don't realize that the parts for these cost money and you can't skimp on what you buy.

DucThis, reading that maybe you can help. Like I mentioned in another post I have been riding motorcycles now for just over one year and on a Ducati for the same time. Haven't ridden another bike beside my 696 Monster. At the shop I purchased they said this would happen, I'd want more power but for having never ridden the 696 was a great start. I really enjoy the 696 but now that I am more confident I am considering a sportbike, of course a Ducati! Either the 848 Dark, Streetfighter or 1198 base. With only a little over a year am I biting off more than I can chew looking at an 1198 or even a Streetfighter? I don't want to get a bike and the first "real" twist of the throttle spook me. I suppose we all have to learn one way or another. What's a good transition?

I have never thought about it like that! But you are very right!

You know your on a badass bike, when you role up to a stoplight next to a 2010 Nissan GT-R, and the driver makes a point to role down his window, get your attention, and tell you how nice your bike is! I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I enjoy that. You smile, nod, and roll off in a better mood than you started off with. You are on cloud nine riding your pride and joy and now you are on top of the world. I love that feeling!!

My transition was from a 600 to a liter bike and then back to a 600 when my liter bike was stolen. After a while I wanted another liter bike, but wanted to get one that I really wanted so I picked up the 999. Depending on the riding you will be doing, a lot of people agree that the 848 is a good enough step. If you are going to pretty much be riding in PC and the immediate surrounding areas, I think you would enjoy the 848 or even the Streetfighter since you have a Monster. It all depends on you though. You know the basics of how a Duc works so your transition should be easy and you will know your comfort zone.

Thanks SMR. Good luck finding the one you want. Keep us updated on what you find. It is funny that this writeup came to me as a result of me talking about tattoos. The feeling has been there, but it took a little bit for the association to kick in.
