buying a cell phone off kijiji? unlocked phone? how do they work?

I'm looking to buy a cell phone off kijiji and im under rogers prepaid at the moment and i want to continue under that provider. If i were to buy a cell phone off kijiji and it was either unlocked or under rogers would i be able to put my sim card in and continue to use pre paid?
