Buying a car radio for a 2004 Jeep Wrangler?

The BIG question is....Does he use his Jeep for off roading? If he does you will want to keep that in mind when pick one out. If he listens to cds they can skip while you are on the trail if don't get the right ones and then there is the off chance that water or mud will get on it, but all of that means nothing if he doesn't really USE his Jeep for it's intended purpose.
 
My boyfriend's Jeep doesn't have a working radio, so as a surprise for Christmas I want to get him one. Is there anything specific I should look out for, like technical specifications? What places are most likely to have good car radios?
