I am 22 and have no car. I get public transport a lot. It's not great in my city but I get by. I occasionally get lifts with friends, and my mother lets me borrow her car sometimes. My town is definitely designed for cars though, everything is long distances and it's very spread out.
I have over $30,000 in savings (hoping to get a house deposit) and I'm thinking of spending some of it on a car. I want to go on spontaneous trips!
However, it would be expensive. I was thinking $2000-8000 for the car, but then there's insurance and of course the ongoing expense of petrol. Plus repairs and stuff. And parking. I still pay concession bus rates, so it's not too bad.
It seems like too much effort for me. Even though most of my friends have cars and can get to places easily, I'm jealous but I don't know if I can be bothered.
Plus the way I see it, cars depreciate fast but my savings are earning lots of interest, so the longer I can put it off the better.
What would you do? Being able to spend this summer driving to friends whenever, driving to the beach etc. does seem appealing. Is it worth the expense? People older than me, what did you do at my age and how have you looked back on it?
