Butters question

How did Leopold Stosh get the name Butters?

It was never stated why in the series but Butters' article in the South Park wikia states:

Is that his name??? Butters might just be my favorite character on the show. In fact I might even argue that without Butters, South Park isn't still making new episodes for as many years as it has.

I always thought that because Butters' last name was Stosh, it was supposed to be a pun, sorta, i.e. Leopold "Butters" Stosh (butterscotch). Now I know.

I had figured it was either because of that or because his patch of yellow hair resembled a pat of butter.
