Does xanax or buspar work better on an as needed basis? I have been taking xanax for awhile, but my sister told me about buspar. I take xanax on an as needed basis for when things get real out of hand and I need to mellow out (3 young kiRAB under 5 and a husband who is military and gone a lot).

With the xanax I feel the calming effect about 1/2 hour after taking it and it does the trick. Does buspar work in the same way?

Thanks

Greetings. That is a very straightforward question to answer.
Buspar is not an "as needed " medication at all. It has to be taken consistently for weeks to get its full effect . I take Buspar and am rather happy with it. Is it as effective as Xanax ? Probably not. The main benefit of Buspar over Xanax is that Buspar has no addiction potential like Xanax. Stopping Buspar will also not lead to any withdrawl effects either .
