I am 21, graduating with a specialized business degree in supply chain management in one week. I have a few corporate opportunities but a lot of them have fallen through because of the economy. If nothing works out, I'm considering a radical career move. I know that a lot of firefighter candidates are business majors. If I can't get a business management job, I'd rather be a firefighter than be unemployed. I am physically able (220 lbs, 6'3) and very athletic. I have several family friends who are firefighters who are always trying to recruit me. I've always seen myself becoming a firefighter in another life.
I'm just concerned about the trade-off involved. I'm imagining if I become a firefighter, I am stuck with that career decision. I could never enter the corporate world once I become a firefighter. What kind of salary or standard of living could I expect? What are the opportunities like? This is stressing me out because I don't know what I'll be getting myself into.
