BUSINESS REPUTATION ?

Hi,
just wanted to ask for advice.

I rented a room for my small within a shop but things did not work out as planned due to the recent recession and I had no income coming in from the business to survive.

I fell into 3 months arrears and had to close down the business. my business landlord was aware of this at the time and I explained the situation to him.

throughout my time renting we did not sign a contract at all it were verbal agreements.

before leaving the business premises I gave my contact details etc in a letter and agreed that I would pay him as soon as I can, hoping that finances would improve in the future.

it has been brought to my attention that my ex landlord has been telling customers that I owe him rent, even customers who call unaware that I'm no longer there anymore have said to me he has been airing private matters publicly.

Is he allowed to do this?

I am in the wrong for owing rent but legally is he allowed to say this to tad public.

could it be classed as ruining my reputation? would be grateful for any advice.

many thanks
