I'll start with the fact that many entry-level jobs these days require 1-3 years of prior work experience in your field of interest. If you don't do internships, how will you ever get there by the time you graduate?
The rest depends on where you are in your education and how much you know about what you want to do in the long run. If you are in high school, or a college freshman, just having exposure to the business world may be enough, or you may want to try out some possible fields to see if they interest you. If you are a junior or senior, you should have a better idea of what you want to do, and your internship should be a way of developing specific skills within your chosen field.
