burning patch/dead patch

Yes I know I should see a doctor about this but I am a giant wuss so I am hoping for an idea here. About halfway down my thigh between my pelvis and knee on the left side of my thigh I have a strange 'patch'. When I place my hand over the skin it feels like I am floating over my leg. It frequently burns if I stand for too long and while it is burning the top feels numb and detached. I am thinking I have some sort of nerve damage but where could this damage come from and what exactly would a doctor do to test it. Thanks
