Built-in wireless ad-hoc authentication for Windows?

I've created an ad-hoc wireless connection between my laptop and desktop, but have been unable to secure it using a network key or anything else available in the connection properties. Does Windows (SP3) have any such feature built in? If not, is there a simple, reliable and free alternative you could suggest? Thank you.
