Building new gaming PC?

Hey guys, my new year's resolution is to build a new gaming PC by the end of the year. I've upgraded the GPU, CPU, RAM, and PSU before but I've never had to upgrade my whole Mobo... I need to know some things. First of all, if I upgrade the MoBo, will I be able to keep all of the other components? My friend who is also very familiar on this topic told me that it all depends on the Mobo I buy, my current cpu is a 2.83 GHz quad.

Also can you guys find me: RAM(3GB) , a MoBo, and a GPU?

And btw, I don't know if I need a new GPU just yet, its a 9800GTX+ so I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't need too, but I Battlefield: Bad company 2 is comining out and it's recon mend GPU is a GTX 260....
