Building base mileage on a bicycle?

I am just wondering, I am a runner who this week put in 35 miles at a 6:35 pace average but recently I have added cycling. For a month I have been cycling. The thing is that I have been using a walmart mongoose cobra bmx bike. I started out riding 4 miles at a 7 minute mile pace, laugh, but now I am up to 3 rides of 1 hr each at about 4:50 pace, 20 min. recovery ride and a 1hr , 20 min. ride at about a 4:50 pace. Can any cyclist help me out with building up my cycling mileage? What about the easiness of the ride. Will it get easier like it has been getting. I am both curious and excited, thanks. I am doing this to get ready for collegiate running but I still love to cycle.

If you really want to start cycling, I recommend you go down to the local bike store and pick out a good quality bike. Expensive yes, but still better than any bike you can get from walmart. If you want to start building mileage, you should probably start going 20 miles a day. Since you're a runner, you should have the aerobic capacity to do this.
