I have an '89 Buick Park Avenue and I'm in college so I can't really afford a full on diagnostics and service. What has been going on is that the car won't shift into 2nd without a serious rev. From about 25-35 on the spedometer, the engine revs insanely fast (no rpm dial) and then it lurches into gear. Also, the engine likes to lock on 45 and will do so until I go to the passing gear in which the car won't stay above 45 unless I hold the pedal to near passing gear. There's not much I can do as far as money goes, but any clues as to the problem woul be awesome. I flushed the transmission and put in a new vacuum modulator valve and water pump in efforts to dissuade the problem, but its only gotten worse.

your problem is simple your transmission is gone and needs to be replaced if you want to do it cheapely and know how go to a junkyard and buy one and put it on yourself look for one that has clean oil and not much metal shavings and buy the junkyard warranty in case it does not work and you need to exchange it .. if your not mechanically inclined your out of luck pay a proffesional to fix it.

automobile transmissions are complicated and expensive to repair. It sounds to me that your transmission is beyond repair and should be replaced by a rebuilt trans (cheapest way) or by a factory produced new trans (very expensive). Your current trans can only diminish in performance to a state of inoperativeness.(not functioning). If you care to take a chance, contact a number of auto junk yards for a suitable trans; which should be cheapest but chancy.
