While this is a buy in freight carrying trains, the implications that Buffet chose a railroad is clear to me. Mass shipments of freight via train is very obviously efficient. I've read about trailors you can simply unload from a truck and just put on a train, so everyone benefits.

There was a time when U.S. travel was primarily by rail. Times were different then, but to some extent I believe we should move more towards more efficient forms of transportation. Anything that uses less fuel and unshackles us from oil is a good thing. Most of our cities have been built around the automobile, of course, but unless renewable fuel sources become more in use I don't see it like that forever.

Just to note: I don't believe any of these alternate forms of transportation really require anyone to forcefully move to higher density areas or big cities. This is a scare tactic that can easily be used by politicians with an agenda (or who just don't know any better--think parking garages near a mass transportation source as a way to not have to move to a big city).
