A smartphone that does the following
(any and all recommendations are welcome):

. Full browser internet surfing on public transit while listening to audio books
. Voice navigation GPS with points of interest (Canada/USA)
. Youtube/vimeo/video watching

What's out there that can help me accomplish what's written above. Thanks a lot. I appreciate your response.

p.s. I am an Apple Fanboy ... but I need to listen to music/books + surf at the same time .. can I do that with the iPhone 3GS ?
 
Nokia E72 can be had for $469 US and has unlimited free navigation/maps through Ovi Maps, has a good browser and you can load Opera onto it if you like. Youtube also works.

Battery life is industry leading and build/reliability is as well.

Downfall .. small screen for your browsing and video watching. In the $500 range though it's hard to get much beter. A Nokia 5800 might also do the trick... however I am not 100% sure on flash-support/youtube
 
i dont believe the e71 had the free navigation added. but the n97 has free navigation and does everything he requested.

however i think the iphone would suit his needs. the iphone does not allow multitasking, but it DOES allow the music player to play in the background. so i would assume he could play his audio books while surfing the web. but he would have to pay for navigatin i assume. the nokia advantage is they just made their full voice navigation totally free for a bunch of their phones, and it works pretty d@mn good too.
 
I don't like what apple is doing with the iphone, but it is probably still unmatched for web browsing and video viewing. 3GS will set you back 600$ but its sooooo much faster than 3G, don't consider downgrading.

You can listen to mp3s while doing other tasks, so you're okay for audiobooks.

None of the other superphones support AT&T-3G right now, which includes the Nexus 1, Droid, and Nokia n900.
 
i forgot about the 3g in the nexus one. once apple brings multitasking to their phone their not gonna be as fast as the 3gs is right now.

it seems that the 3Gs might be my final choice.

I am considering getting a three to six months used
3Gs, which will save me $250... Would you trust
a used 3Gs if it looks unbeaten and is fully functional
during the quick test on purchase ?
 
A used 3GS will be fine if it's not battered and works properly. Just make sure it's for your existing carrier; that way, you don't have to unlock it to use it.

The Nexus One would be right out anyways, since the current version would be limited in carrier choices and coverage (Wind Mobile and Videotron, I believe).
 
Telus has the milestone as "coming soon" on their site.
not sure if it'll come ready for my network though, Fido.

I've watched a youtube video comparing the 3GS and the milestone,
I felt that the 3gs is more packaged, hastle free and if there's any trouble
I just walk over to the Apple store.
