Buddhists: Why do Buddhists want to save the environment if they see life as suffering?

Wouldn't it make more sense then to just let the planet degrade to the point where it can't support life (suffering)?
3rd answerer: But they can alleviate more suffering, ultimately, by ensuring that more lives do not come to be in this world of suffering.
 
I may be mistaken, but I believe the POINT of Buddhism is to alleviate that suffering.
