Buddhism & Astronomy: Could the world burn up by 7 suns?

In one sutta, the Buddha is reported to have said that the earth will eventually dry up through the appearance of another, than yet another sun until there are seven altogether when the earth is supposed to burn up without remainder. Is there a possible astronomic scenario that would obtain such an impression? Could the sun maybe break up into two?
 
No, that would be scientifically impossible.

It would be like the oxygen and the carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere suddenly completely separating from each other.
