Browsing T3 SDcard from desktop PC?

Hello folks,

Im new to the world of Palm and I'm loving it already. I was wondering if someone maybe able to help?

I would like to browse my Tungsten T3 SDcard from my desktop pc, maybe move some files, delete, edit etc. Am I being stupid? This seems like a normal thing to be able to do. A friend has a Sony Clie and is able to use MSimport when the PDA is in its cradle. Should I have something similar? Do I need to download some software?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Such software exists, I'm sure, but in all these cases, I strongly recommend you buy a cheap card reader. They are available for so little these days (less than $10) and will save time and effort. To get good software to do what you want, you'd end up paying more than if you bought a card reader, and it'd also be much slower.

I think that Card Export (sorry haven't got the link) may be the programme you're looking for, but just check first! Says the man who leaps first and looks after.......

It will allow you to browse your Palm SD as an additional drive on your PC, after you load up the PC conduit. The card reader (I use the Lexar Jump Drive Trio from WalMart) another great option, and I use this when transfering Mp3s to my player and downloading pics from my camera as well.

Hope that this helps.

P.S. Using Card Export does 'tie-up' your T3 (ie you can only browse your card when 'connected'), moving anywhere else on the pda breaks the connection, if that makes sense. The card reader means you can do both, and just means you'll need to transfer the card.

After you insert your SD card, Win Explorer will recognize a new, removable drive, and you can look around-move (be careful)-delete (be very careful) all you want. As iiic notes, the card reader is super-useful for moving pix and mp3s, etc. to the card easily. And as I preach, Excel and Word files from PC to SD for use by Docts2Go (must be in /documents/ directory on the card).

By the way, if you haven't already got file management software for your Palm, if recommend Filez (free- Freeware.com) and/or Fileman (bitsnbolts.com)- great for looking at/deleting/moving SD and RAM files from within Palm.

Hope this helps & good luck.

Thanks for all your comments so far.

I posted the same message on another PDA forum and only got 1 response so I'm gonna stick with you lot if thats ok....?

A card reader sounds good - especially as an investment. I could read various different card types so if I ever purchased something else, (Sony digital camera for example), I'd be covered. But I wanted to use it on my home PC and on my work laptop. The card reader option would mean I have to carry it to and from work!

Another thing! Should I be doing a 'hot synch' on my home PC and then another at work? Im sure I heard that its not reccommended? Does anyone else do this? Is it safe?

So the Card Export software sounds a good solution - I don't have to carry anything between home and work! But, is it a lot slower to copy, edit and move as some of you hint towards?

I downloaded the demo of 'Card Export' to test the speed but it is not supported on Win98,(im at work). I have XP at home so could test it there but for now im stuck.
It wouldnt be a problem in the long run as Im due an upgrade soon and so at work I will be using XP too.

What do you think?

I have Zlauncher and that has its own file management software - I think? Does Filez or Fileman do anything that that doesn't?

Cheers

Well to be honest, I'd still go the card reader option. Most laptops have a PCMCIA slot, which you could put a cheap card reader in for just SD cards. I noticed you are in the UK, so here are some links to Ebuyer UK, which you may find interesting. (ebuyer is not ebay, so it's all new stuff. I've been quite impressed with them).

This link is all the card readers:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...order_col=sell_price&subcat_uid=400&order=ASC

This is a PQI 4 In 1 USB 2.0 SD/MMC/MS/MSPRO Reader and it's less than a fiver (?4.71 ex VAT):

There are many in stock and it has a high rating.

I couldn't see an SD PCMCIA reader, that you could get for use on your laptop, but if you're interested I could find one elsewhere as I'm sure they exist.

I don't think synching your PDA with two computers is a good idea. It all comes down to conflict between changed data on the PDA and two desktops. It may be possible to make it work smoothly, by setting one desktop to be overwritten by the PDA everytime, but maybe someone else can explain this as I'm unsure (I've never done it).
Look forward to seeing you around -we're always here to help :)

Thanks for your response.

Im not quite sure what I will go for but realistically I think I am swaying to the idea of a card reader! For that price as well, Id be stupid not too - I might as well buy two!

I need to look into it a bit more in reference to a hot synch between two computers - Im worried about overwriting my contacts or diary. Your suggestion is good in that one of them should be set to accept the changes from the Palm. If anyone does do this or tried and failed please let me know.....?

I purchased PDA Essentials the other day - a monthly magazine for Palm, PocketPC and Smartphone. It was full of good stuff and even came with a CD packed with software - admittedly most of it could be downloaded from the web anyway but it did have 1 or 2 full programs, Datashield being one.

A handy little programme for storing web, bank or other personal passwords and sensitive information all for free.

Better chip but thanks again and look forward to seeing more soon.

Are you using Outlook both at home and at work or are you using the Palm Desktop at home? If you're using Outlook at both places, what versions?

If the T3 still came with Pocket Mirror, I'd be a lot more positive about you syncing to two computers. The Outlook conduits that come with the T3 are written by Palm and are considerably less spohisticated about resolving conflicts than Pocket Mirror. If you're using the Palm Desktop and Outlook, things get even hazier. As iii3 wrote, an option would be to always set one computer as the "master" and always overwrite the data on the other PC. The problem is that you almost inevitably forget which one is the master or enter something in one computer and it gets wiped out by the overwrite sync.

My suggestion would be to make sure you have a good backup both at home and at work and also take a good backup to your SD card. Try syncing to both compters normally and see how it goes. Some people do this every day with few problems while others find it a complete disaster. By having good backups before you try it out, you can restore everything if the experiment goes pear shaped.

Hi Folks,

I found this on the Palmone website and although it confirms what has already been said I thought I would share it with you....

If you use two or more PCs (for example, a home PC and a work PC or a work PC and a laptop), you can install the Palm(tm) Desktop software on both machines. When you synchronize one computer with your Palm handheld, synchronizing on the second computer works fine. You may notice that the synchronization process may sometimes take a little longer if you synchronize on multiple PCs, which is normal.

I wonder if anyone can help....?

Im having trouble synchronizing my PDA with Outlook. The conduits that came with my T3 are all installed and I have even installed an update from the Palmone site. I had it working two weeks ago and now every Outlook synch' comes back as 'synchronization failed'.

Ive tried uninstalling things ie, additional Bluetooth software, going back to Palm desktop and then back to Outlook, uninstalling Palm desktop and then reinstalling with the Outlook conduits its driving me mad.!!!!!!!!!!

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
