Brown dumplings

Had dinner at mom's the other night. She fixed chicken and
dumplings. She has always made her dumplings out of regular Bisquick
and adds a pinch of baking powder to make them extra fluffy. This
time, however, she added baking soda instead. The dumplings came out
brown as if they had been made with whole wheat flour. They were
edible but they did have a slight metallic taste to them. I guess she
won't do that again.
