I had a fusion in 2006 @ L4-L5 the hardware failed and was repaired 6 months later. I then had a screw come loose which was fixed three months after that. In 2/2007 I had a complete revision due to non-fusion.
I went to normal doctor appointments for 6 months after my last surgery in severe back pain and sciatica. My surgeon looked at plain films each time and said I was solidly fused.
He then sent me to pain management which I have been on for a year. 10/325 Oxycodone 4 x day, Trazadone 2 x day, Tizinidine x 2 day. 10mg Oxycontin for breakout pain.
I went to another highly reputable ortho hospital and the surgeon there ordered a CT. I have a broken bone at the L4 pedicle and lamina in a place which he had never seen in his 25 years. He says that is had to have been done by a chisel during the previous surgery as it is not natural break.
Now that I have wasted 18 months basically homebound, (I was a 43 Y/O active male) I have a vitamin D deficiency and high blood sugar which may be diabetes, the cause is basically from not moving much.
I have another SPECT and Bone scan after which he will do a 360 fusion and remove the broken bone and replace with a plastic spacer. They will go in from the front this time.
I was wondering about the recovery time for a 360 from the front removing bone, hardware and the old fusion? I know I was down 3 months with the TLIF.
Has anyone experienced this much work on the same level? This will be the 4th major surgery.
Moral of the story, do not let a doctor tell you everything is OK when your pain is to the point of making you home
bound without serious narcotics.
