Broken Speedometer Cable

My speedo cable broke last weekend, and I finally got it in to service. The bike only has about 1,000 miles on it and it's still under warranty, so it didn't cost me anything to fix it. But from the looks of it, it may happen again. There is a 45 degree bend in the cable housing about 2 1/2" from where the cable is attached to the speedometer. That's exactly where it broke the cabel inside. The service guy showed me the part schematic for the cable, and it shows the same bend, so it's manufactured that way.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there anything I can do to keep it from happening again?

My first Intruder 800 went 135,000 miles with the original speedo cable. My second one went 7000 and the cable broke. The replacement was put on at the same angle, and had gone 50,000 trouble-free miles. For the life of me I can't tell any difference in the three cables or the way they were put on; sometimes they just break.

Great fun! Rained cats and dogs for about 80% of the trip back, and around Meridian Mississippi a hornet got up my pant leg, down into my boot, and stung me 4 times before I could get stopped, but other than that it was one heck of a time!

Dontcha just hate it when that happens, now if if you were wearing opened toed sandels that wouldn't have happened !

Kidding aside, sorry for what happened, must have been painfull the rest of the way.
