ok i understand that if i can dance i will be more successful in musical theatre, but do i have to be a full blown ballerina type. i was just thinking that i should atleast get some technique down. is that enough???

i think you should take ballet for a summer, that will get you good technique, then over the years you could take 1 or two jazz or modern or lyrical classes, and continue doing ballet in the summers. i truthfully think it will help, and you will lose it if you only take it for a certain amount of time then stop. so i say yes, it is important in musical theatre, and its important just in life it will help you alot i think :)

I hate to tell you this, but many of the dancers on Broadway are retired ballet dancers or academy trained ballet dancers, who couldn't get work in the ballet. I know of 3 classmates of mine who are doing just that. However, it is not nessecary to be able to dance like that unless you were auditioning for someting like West Side Story. The more dance you have, the better. You should take at least 2 ballet classes a week to start. Once you build some techinique, you should start with adding some theater dance classes. You can take tap right away without the ballet. Good luck.

You would definitely need ballet and jazz. Hip-Hop is easy, so don't worry to much about that. Plus, its not really in musicals. I think that you should have dancing under your belt. EVERY MUSICAL HAS DANCEING IN IT! You may be better in everything else, but they may pick a slightly less good singer/actor just because they can dance. They wouldn't need to teach them everything. Also, the better you get at dancing, you will be able to pick the dances up faster.. another plus!

Good luck!
