British media described the Federer-Sampras match with "Today begins

Wimbledon proper". What does it mean? I was watching the Fed-Sampras match and Ted Robinson said the British newspaper used the headline "Today begins Wimbledon proper" to describe the match. I'm not exactly sure what "Wimbledon proper" means in this context.

It means Federer - Sampras match is improper and just a marketing tamasha(gimmick).

But will Fed win the championship? The way he played and his body longuage suggests that he will not.
