Bringing cremated ashes into the UK on a plane, what are the regulations?

They have the certificate about whose ashes they are and when and where they were cremated etc. still attached to the container, should I bring them in my hand baggage as I was told years ago? And do I need to declare them? If so should I behave as though I'm declaring too much duty free or something and avoid my usual route of 'nothing to declare'?

The cremation took place in the UK several years ago, but now we're moving back we're bringing them with us.

Thanks for your help.
