BRICK android tmobile g1 custom rom?

I have an android tmobile g1 phone that was bricked but I followed these instructions and now have RC29 on it

I was told that the phone already has root access but I am interested in loading cyanogen 6 on it and probebly froyo 2.2

Can anyone please clarify how to do this? I do not have a tmobile sim card and the phone is not unlocked yet, is there a way to do this without bringing up a shell script/ telnet and flashing a recovery image on it?
