The Taliban has governed Afghanistan before and were in power when the 9/11 attacks occurred, so the UN had them removed from power. The group as a whole is not considered to be terrorist by the international community, but they do sympathize with al-Qa'eda and the more militant among them have been anti-American in the past. Karzai is seen to be a rather weak leader, with a corrupt brother who is heavily involved in the drug trade. The Taliban, on the other hand, has strong leadership and would vehemently resist (through violence if necessary) having no voice in how Afghanistan is governed. A similar deal was worked out with the Shiites and other sects in Iraq in 2009 and 2010 so that our combat troops could leave.
President Obama has wanted to end the war in Afghanistan at the earliest possible time and his administration has been tirelessly working towards this end so that our troops can come home at last. The tentative date so far is August 31 (the end of summer) this year. If a cooperative can be formed in Afghanistan so that all people have representation in their government, this is a good thing that just might mean an earlier withdrawal. I'm for these peace talks and I'm for ending this eleven-year war.
