Samsung Electronics Corp, the world’s largest maker of televisions and based in South Korea, has announced it purchased Boxee Inc, a startup based in New York whose set top box for televisions can stream videos online and record broadcasts.No terms were released regarding the deal by either company. Boxee designs apps for tablets and phones for video streaming based on the iOS operating system by Apple and the Android platform by Google, along with software that operates in its TV boxes.
Samsung, the electronics giant, said Boxee would be beneficial in developing devices that are Internet enabled.
Homes across the country have become a large battleground for companies offering technology. Both Sony and Microsoft are about to launch new video game consoles highlighting new features that offer streaming and downloading content.
In addition, Apple is nearing a deal with Time Warner Cable that would give them many more channels for their Apple TV products.
Boxee CEO Avner Ronen as well as a Samsung spokesperson would not comment on the Boxee acquisition terms.
Samsung has a goal of maintaining its worldwide lead in TV sales, develop new apps different means of controlling its sets, including adding an embedded camera, similar to Microsoft’s motion sensitive Kinect.
Roku, Inc yet another maker of TV-boxes, that remains closely held, gained success with it boxes that stream online content that can be found in some places for as little as $50.
Boxee, prior to the acquisition, had found itself battling with many of the media giants since its inception in 2007.
