Bought a puppy out of a newspaper, how much of a chance am I taking in doing so?

I've been wanting a dog and after looking in the newspaper I found an ad and went for it. I bought an 5 week old Jack Russell and Chihuahua mix. I called and the owner told me straight, they bought a second dog and had a male & female together with neither fixed and that's how this litter happened. The puppies all looked healthy, including mine. The owner showed me papers(bills) where a local vet saw them. After I've done all this,a friend of mines told me I was wrong for buying a puppy from a backyard breeder(what is that?) and that I should've rescued a puppy. She then added that I was taking a huge risk in ending up with a "poor quality" puppy.

What's done is done now,I'm going to pick up my new puppy at 7 weeks old,but am I really taking such a huge risk in buying a puppy from a paper? I mean if I was to have rescued there's be no guarantees on that pup either right? Am I wrong for not rescuing a pet and buying one from this owner who didn't intentionally breed?
