Bored of the Rings

I know this thread is bound to get die hard fans saying "What an awful thing to say" and the like, but I'm really fed up with Lord of the Rings... It's not the greatest film ever, it is (In opion!) overated tosh. Yes the books are good and they have a very good following, I have read all 3 and the films do stick extremely close to them, but they (The films) still are boring pap.

Bring on the shouting...

Well you are perfectly entitled to your opinion of them and hey if you don't like them, that's ok :)
I personally think the films are great and I don't find them boring but I wouldn't go so far as to call them the greatest ever.

I didn't like the films either, far too long for me, on top of other things. And I'm fed up of being told it's the greatest film ever. And especially fed up when you are challenged by LOTR fanatics when you say you don't like the films.

I'd be careful - what if lala heard you say that :D ;)

I don't deny that they are very good movies, it's just that they're not my kind of thing and perhaps aren't as deserving of all the attention that they've received - an Oscar for best editing is a shocking example of the LOtR mania, when it is probably one of the worst edited films of the year :(

the thing i found with LOTR (and i know its largely due to the books) was that for nearly 10 hours worth of film, there wasn't actually that much plot, and what there was couldn't have been more linear. (especially the two towers)

frodo wanders around a lot in beautiful NZ scenery, and every once in a while does his pained look of fear as he feels The Power of the Ring.

aragon rides his horse through some beautiful NZ scenery, and every once in a while takes part in a big battle.

I personally think all three films are fantastic and they will be remembered for a long time to come. However, if you don't like the films that is fine, everybody has different tastes and it would be a sorry world if we were all the same.:)

I'm with Stormit on this one. The characters are so dull you don't care about anything that happens to them, and the "plot" seems to involve them wondering around whilst random things happen to them. I thought the first hour of the first film was okay, but then the film just seemed to stop at the point they reached the Elves kingdom. 5 hours later, and at the end of the second film it started to get a bit interesting again with a battle. I haven't wasted my money on the third

Didn't think the direction was up to much either. Much is made of the NZ scenery, but you never get a good look as PJ is too busy waving the camera around (watch Xena if you want to see NZ scenery). And suprisingly, I didn't think the effects were particularly impressive either.

But above all it's just extremely boring and just doesn't hold my interest for a minute, which wouldn't be so bad if it was a 90 minute film, but for a film to be 3 hours and work it really neeRAB to be something special. It neeRAB atmosphere, interesting characters and an engaging story, and it just doesn't have any of those.

It's frustrating as I know so many people seem to love these films that I think I must be missing out on something. My only explanation is that if you read the book when you were five the fact that there's any film at all which doesn't entirely suck is a huge event. Having not read the book I don't know if there's any truth in that.

I aree with this, in my previous posts on Lord of the Rings, i have accused it of having a poor script. It lacks any cohesion, i just came away feeling that the film was quite shallow, as though it had only scraped the surface so to speak.

It is hardly the best acting either. On the plus points the scenery is beautifully filmed, and the back drops look breath taking at times.

IMHO i wish Peter Jackson had not been given the task of directing this film. I think it could have been made even better with a director with more experience.

I don't think LOTR will be remembered as a classic in years to come.

Oh and i am a LOTR fan, i have read the books many times.
