...Things, Fine Balance, Glass Palace)? I love reading books set in Asia or by Asian authors as I have travelled there and loved to be taken back there in my mind. I have read the named books which have great characters and I think are brilliantly wrote. I don't need a book to always be happy and I understand especially in these books there are very dark themes to be addressed but these don't seem to offer anything else.

Like I said I think these books are really well wrote but after I find them very depressing and feel a little down. I've just got half way through The Rice Mother and can't believe what has happened. I also read A Fine Balance a few years ago and still can't believe how it ended.

I'm not saying all Asian authors or books are like this but these very good ones are.

Has anybody else read these books and what do they think and are there any books people could suggest to me?

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden (I highly recommend this one)
Books by Huraki Murakami
