Book about Labrador dog and disabled/autistic boy?

Hi,

my friend recently told me about a book I would like to buy for her as a present. I don't know the title, but she said it is a story about a Labrador dog who helps a boy to get through life. The boy was either autistic or disabled, cannot remember correctly. He was definitely disadvantaged.

Anyone got a clue what the title/author of this book might be?
