I have a 1973 BMW R75/5. It hasn't ran in almost 2 years. The battery is TOTALLY dead so i connected jumper cables to it about 5 days ago and it wouldn't kick over so i cleaned out the carbs and put in fresh PREMIUM gas. I didn't try starting it up again until yesterday. It started but it only ran for about 5 minutes at a time. When i took the jumper cables off of the battery the engine would turn off? Is the only reason its doing that because the battery is so dead? When i try to turn the throttle to give it some gas it does nothing. The throttle doesn't even work it seems like unless i turn it REALLY hard. What is the deal with it?email me at [email protected] if you would like to give a lot of detail or if you would like to talk to me about it.
about 3 years ago we had a guy fix it for us for free and it ran GREAT. we got everything changed on it. Hoses, some electrical, and the carbs were cleaned out really well.

the throttle cables probably are sticking. lube them up to begin with. you also need a new battery as that one is probably shorting out. I would also get new plugs and get the carburetors synched. it should run if you do these things. remember , you need only 4 things to run an engine, 1. good spark...2. good compression... 3. good timing, and 4 fuel. hope this helps a bit.
