Bluetooth Phone Link Question

I am considering whether or not to buy a new LG 325 (soon to be released). This phone has bluetooth and one of the big reasons I want it is so that I can use the my Palm contacts to dial the phone.

Upon researching this and using the Phone Link Updater I have found that Palm is really behind in updating the updater. Which acording to it means that I can not link the phone at this time. I realize that it would be this way as the phone isn't really available yet, but I noticed that some phones that have been out for some time aren't even available after running the updater, such as the T608?

Is this a hopeless wish to be able to link my T2 with this new phone? What kind of options do I have...are there home grown phone link drivers popping up?

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Cheers!

I'm sorry for being negative, but I'm afraid at this point it is indeed a "hopeless wish." P1 won't update squat because they want to sell you a Treo 850 or 1040 or 6Million or whatever the new "cash grab" is.

Up until this point I followed your way of thinking . . . use a PDA as a PDA and the phone as the phone, but be able to link them up. I've been waiting a year and a half and "following the developments."

I deal with an AT&T guy here in California who's just terrific, and his advice all along was "WAIT! Save your money. Stuff is coming."

He was right - phones have developed - but if your T2 can't "talk" to the phone, bluetooth is irrelevant. My advice would be get the best phone you can (sounds like you have one in mind), and stick as many of your numbers in it as you can, and not even attempt to dial contacts from the T2. I gave up early on the T3 in that regard, and have just "JackSpratted" the Dialer, Modem Support, SMS, SMS Support and the like. I'll use the room for something that actually works, and when it's time for a new phone I'll check out your suggestion!!

The alternative would be go with a Treo, but frankly I wouldn't give up a T2 just for "phone-ness." Nothing wrong with the T2 and what it does . . . I'd just try and make the new phone do as much as possible, and your contacts will be safely in TWO places instead of one.

Well I have to say thanks for your honesty! What you say does make sense, allthough P1's attitude towards it all pisses me off. I'm suprised that there aren't "homegrown" versions of these types of drivers popping up. But oh well, I am in need of a new phone as mine is croaking, so I guess I'll just have to be like the rest of the Bluetoothers out there and only be able to use the bluetooth for a wireless hands free.....

Thanks again!

BC525,

You can still use your Palm PDA to dial out to your cellphone via bluetooth without the correct driver. And you can also send out SMS and transfer file and pictures by using the standard GSM driver.

The Palm built-in Dialer and SMS appplications can get the phone numbers from your Contacts app and then dial/send it through your bluetooth phone. But you can not use Versamail or WebPro to connect to your phone for emails and internet browsing (via GPRS) without the right driver. Sending files and pictures back and forth is not a problem though.

I am using a Nokia 7610 and I've tried all the phonelink listed drivers for similar Nokia phones (7650, 3650, etc.) without success.

For added information, this is what I do now: My Nokia 7610 can receive emails with attachments like Word or Excel files but it can not open/read such files. But these files can be bluetoothed to my T3, and I can use my T3 DocsToGo to open and work on it. Problem is, while I can send back the Word or Excel files to my phone, I have not found a way to attach these files to my outgoing emails from there (only pictures, video and sound files can be used as attachments using the phone's email application). This is the reason why I still have my older phone (SE T610) in my car for direct use with my T3 (it's bluetooth connection is flawless).

I assumed that the T2 and T3 are not much different in terms of built-in applications and bluetooth configuration when I made the previous reply. My bluetooth experience with other cellphones are limited only to the T3. I am sorry if you will find my answer not applicable to your unit.

For what it's worth...

I had my T3 originally setup for a Siemens S56. Worked well with VersaMail and Web Pro as well as dialing numbers from my address book.

I recently upgraded from the S56 to a Motorola V600. I simply went into preferences and paired the V600 to the T3. I then went to Connections and created a new connection using the V600. Next I went to my network connection and changed the connection for my wireless network to the new connection I had created.

It worked flawlessly, connected to the internet first try.

Next, since I sometimes use the T3 to dial people from my address book. I went back into connections and using the driver for a Motorola TP280 created a phone connection to the V600. If I go into the phone section and test this connection it fails since the model of the phone is wrong, but it does dial numbers without fail. The only problem I?ve encountered is using the SMS program. Since I?ve always found it easier to use the phone for sending small messages, this does not bother me.

Bottom line is, don?t give up. I?m not an expert but I don?t believe Bluetooth requires specific drivers in order to link and share data between devices.
