The only Blue Lake Camp I know is east of Dock Butte. Fishing is
poor, the bears are two weeks out of winter hibernation and hungry,
while snow line is just a thousand feet higher in surrounding peaks.
Nights still go down to freezing, the narrow tarmac descends past
dense stands of evergreen to fast cold river in a distant valley, so
most passer-by who glance up at Blue Lake Camp never see it.
The camping is done at a former Spar Pole location where timber
was loaded aboard trucks. Ground is steel-hard former roadbed.
Free-standing tents are advised as pegs will likely bend or break.
Portable potties are available as is spring water out of rusty pipe.
The nearest horse camp is a half-day hard hike westward. Other
treks lead to mountain caverns, Nordic snowfields, glacial ice, and
steaming fumaroles north of the snowmobile recreational area. If
you see people praying and it isn't Sunday chances are good one
more camper isn't ever going home again.
