Blood in spit? What's up with this?

I have bad allergies and sinus problems (had surgery in 2004). I am just getting over a chest cold (my entire family is sick with it), but some weird stuff has been happening...

A couple of weeks ago, I took a antihistamine/decongestant before going to bed, and woke up in the morning with an extremely dry throat, mouth, and nose. I went to the bathroom and discovered I had some blood in my spit. It lasted for a 5-6 spits and looked like it was all collected on the tongue--I wasn't coughing it up, and when I tried to pull some phlegm from my lungs, the only thing that was produced was some mildly yellow phlegm--no blood.

Then last night, I woke up with a super dry throat, mouth, and nose again, and the same thing happened, although there was much less blood this time. I feel pretty good (chest cold is about 95% gone), and I'm not coughing anymore, and save for some sinus issues, I feel pretty good. So I am little perplexed. This has only happened in the morning after sleeping.

My doctor gave me an antibiotic yesterday, but I still had some pink early this morning.

I am 38, in good shape, and a non-smoker. Has anyone else had a problem with this?

The extremely dry throat and mouth is a direct result of the fact that you took an antihistamine before you went to bed. My guess is that you slept with your mouth open during the night and dried out your membraines even more...they are rather sensitive and they tore some when you tried to clear your mouth in the am and got blood with your spit. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. The fact that the drainage was yellow tells you that you were headed for an infection. I"m not surpirsed that your doctor put you on antibiotics.

But that the problem with antihistamines. They dry you out so badly that your mouth becomes the sahara desert. Try running a cool mist vaporizer in your bedroom and see if that doesn't help take care of the issue..
