Blog Talkback: toonzone goes to MCM Expo May 2011: The Cat Came Back

Was Redline mentioned at that Anime Industry panel? That should be one of Manga's big titles as far as marketing goes.

Freedom on Blu-Ray, oooooh. I might import that depending on the price. The Bandai Visual USA box from way back is OOP and never gotten by me because of the premium cost.

Very interesting & a shame Blu-Ray seems to be an uphill fight for anime and/or cartoons in general in the UK. It's practically the opposite in the U.S., where FUNimation's fond of pointing out that the market for HD keeps growing and that anime fans tended to be adopting it at an above-average pace. I wonder if this is more about differences in the fanbase or overall consumer preferences when it comes to the home video market. I guess a handful of more years are needed for this to develop.

Sounds like Bleach is to the UK con scene what Naruto was to the U.S. one roughly five years ago, when wearing a ninja headband was the cool thing to do. Heh.

Funnily enough, there was a girl at the steampunk panel who made a catty remark against Naruto cosplayers that felt uneeded. Bleach does seem to be taking the lead, but Naruto was represented as well. Lots of tolks seem to like the 'generic Konoha chunin' look. Allso various Vocaloid, Vampire Knight and Ikki Tousen. Also, one Gundam cosplayer as Athrun!

I don't recall Redline being mentioned, sadly. I was frantically scribbling notes, which is difficult when you're hearing clearly foreign titles for the most part. The big focus was on Tiger & Bunny (which got dropped more then once) and the Anime On Demand service. I'm hopeful that'll work out, since it's clearly been designed to give UK fans a voice and more viewing options.

I think there's various factors in regards to the Blu-ray issue but that currently the easiest answer is that folks just haven't made the transition yet. I work in a supermarket currently and I can't recall ever seeing someone purchase a blu-ray there. Players certainly, but no discs. I think it's a fact that the mainstream is still generally content with DVD here and when the mainstream won't budge, niches like anime will struggle too. Especially if you're comparing a big movie like Avatar to a show like FMA that can't even get a TV deal.

The BV release was directly mentioned and it seems clear they're pitching this as 'For those who want a sensible, affordable release...'. Really, there seemed to be a subtle undercurrent that people really don't like having to work with Bandai on these things.
