Blog Talkback: Toons of the 2000s: Top 5 Nicktoons

It was nothing like Mucha Lucha at all besides the main characters being Mexican Americans. I mean one is a show about a wrestling school and the other is about a family of Super Heroes, there are not many similarities past the look and even it is not that much alike.

Im not surprised Avatar got #1, well deserved for an amazingly done show. I got to say when this first aired i was very skeptical, dint think Nickelodeon could pull something like this off, but it did, and it did it gloriously. The way it built and explored its world was magnificent (the different cultures that were shown were great too), something rarely seen in cartoons these days, a true adventure show. Characters, story, action, drama, comedy, it was all amazing. My favorite character was Zuko, who IMO owned this show, the way he developed through the series is the best thing about this show i think (he definitely grew the most as a person), i loved watching it. Only disapointement was the final battle with the fire Lord, IMO Aang won far too easily, but otherwise it was great.

Not sure i agree on a lot of other choices though, if it was up to me As Told by Ginger, Invader Zim and Danny Phantom would be in the top 5. I consider those three the best on Nick after Avatar.

IMO As Told by Ginger at least deserves an honorable mention, what gives?

Kudos to rabroad for having the confidence to keep Invader ZIM off the list. Granted, I personally do feel the show deserves a spot in the Top 5 but I bet you guys were fearing all the backlash you might receive had you not.

And these series are all shows the TZ staff collectively felt were significant, not a list of the definitive series.

I really appreciate the props given to El Tigre and Jimmy Neutron. Both series seemed to remain underrated despite Neutron's long life on Nick and Tigre never had a chance once Nick cast it off to Saturday noon slots. I like Neutron a bit more than Tigre but I wouldn't mind a DVD release since I missed out a number of 2nd season episodes which were a huge step-up over the first

The only thing I'd change is Avatar and SpongeBob's placements. But I realize it is of course just an opinion piece and success isn't everything.

I see I may be the only person in the world who despises Avatar. Fair enough, moving on. I was a little disappointed that Danny Phantom didn't make the full list, but was quite happy to see El Tigre make it. That show was completely overlooked and it's quite sad that we never got to see where the creators were going with it.

Might I ask why you despise Avatar? Is it just because you don't like action, only saw one or two episodes which happen to be Avatar's worst, or actually watched it all and just didn't like it? No long explanation needed, just a short one.

The third one. for the most part, I rarely hate or dislike things unless I've actually seen them in full. Though I should add that it's hardly the worst cartoon I've ever seen or ever will see.

I have to wonder at what about Avatar's high-quality writing, animation, character developement, and plot progression makes you despise it. If it just didn't impress you, that would be understandable, but "despise"? However, I understand if you don't want to explain.

I'm surprised, none of those shows are my favorite! Spongebob is the only show I can understand being in the top 5...:ack:. Invader Zim FTW!

It may be my opinion that Avatar "has the best writing, animation, plot, etc. ever in western animation", but who would deny it just has high-quality animation, writing, plot progression, etc (compared to other western cartoons)? You don't need to like something to admit it's high-quality.

Different strokes for different folks. High quality or not, there are certain amount of people who does not view Avatar in that manner for whatever reasoning they possess. The show was not built with everybody's mindset. Some may not care for continuity or drama and instead find it irritating when they prefer a standalone, episodic series or they probably enjoy slapstick humor instead of realistic martial arts.
