Blog Talkback: Toons of the 2000s: Top 5 Disney Animated Television Series

Why isn't American Dragon in it? It's the closest thing to Anime they did without actually have the Anime style to it. They simply blended Mulan with Gargoyles and voila, Jake Long.

I'm not sure if I would consider American Dragon a blend of Mulan and Gargoyles. The only aspects that the series has from them is that the main character is Chinese-American and that the magical creatures are hidden from the world, except for a few people. I would have liked to see it getting an honorable mention myself since it did improve in the second season. Although, it still had a rushed and unsatisfying conclusion, but it was a nice series.

Sorry, I just don't see it. Jake Long had nothing in common with Mulan except for both having an Asian protagonist.

Looking back on The Weekenders, I sometimes wonder why I stuck with it for as long as I did. It wasn't bad, mind you, but the shows' humor was very dialogue heavy. It was almost like watching a live action show, only animated. Interestingly, if The Weekenders had been a live action show, I probably wouldn't have looked at it twice. Generally, I prefer my cartoons to be more, well...cartoony. Yet, I still enjoyed the series. Not as much I did Pepper Ann, though. Pepper Ann came of as more a more innovative to me because it was one of the very few TV shows out there with a female protagonist who was more of a "awkward" girl, not a super model in training. Pepper Ann the character was kind of like female Napoleon Dynamite or a 12-year-old Liz Lemon. Also, unlike The Weekenders, PA's writers didn't hold back from having gags that could and would only work in a cartoon universe.

American Dragon was a decent series, but for as much good concepts and elements it possessed (a world council of dragons, a romance arc that didn't deter into a typical love triangle plot, improved animation in the second season), it had a number of problems that prevented me from enjoying the overall experience; the main villains Dark Dragon and The Huntsman were duller then dull with a one-note personality, the fillers were often boring or uninteresting (I kept clamoring for the more plot relevant episodes), and thought it had a story arc (one for each season) and continuity, it wasn't as deep as I hoped it would be and was kept fairly straightforward - possibly because half the episodes were mucked with fillers. I don't think that hurts the series since that was how the story was structured from the get-go, it just wasn't up to the taste I prefer, is all.

Still, it was a generally solid series that yeah, I could see it on an honorable list.

Please… If she were a fan-made character, everybody would consider her to be a Mary Sue. She’s perfect in just about every way and her “flaws”, if you can call them that, were trivial at best. She got nervous around boys. She got too sensitive about that handicapped kid. She had trouble driving. Those “negative” characteristics must really be unbearable… I know that the character was meant to be practically perfect, and J. B. Warner’s point about Bugs Bunny does make some sense, but she’s far from a realistic character.

Well, the car and the boy trouble actually felt more like regular teenage problems than anything else, so her having those flaws weren't even that special to begin with, since that's something everyone practically goes through at one point or another in their life. I was expecting something else to be her weakness.

I'll give some credit for the handicapped people since there are some that treat them "special" and that they should feel sorry for them, like how Kim handled it. While most look past their disability and see what kind of person they are. But other than that she was too perfect, I mostly laughed at how much of a robot she was in that Lilo and Stitch episode.

That's true. It would have been nicer if they did develop the main villains some more. It also would have been cool if they had more than two main villains since they did mention that there was a list of the worst enemies to the magical realm. There were quiet a few filler episodes that were generally dull and it also didn't help that Jake, for the good portion of season one, used annoying slang terms. Season two gave some much needed improvement to the series, but it still wasn't top five material. I could also maybe see it on a top ten list, but an honorable mention list would also work for American Dragon.

As for Kim Possible, her perfectness never really bothered me. There were times where she was really flat, such as in that Lilo and Stitch episode, and the problems she did have were usually solved completely, never to show up again, at the end of the episode. The only exception was with being shy around boys. I like Kim Possible, but I agree that she is not a realistic character at all.

When it came to Kim Possible, I always felt Kim was the straight man surrounded by characters that were fun and wacky that helped support the show.
Kind of like Hank from King of the Hill.

It's good to see Phineas and Ferb on that list.

but I personally feel that Pucca belonged on that list, though you might think it's just me. yes, I'm still going on about how Pucca fell into hiatus without anyone from Disney, Vooz, or Studio B telling viewers why.

while i know it's your opinion and all but I think your valuing continuity a bit too much ,fillers are good because you can experiment with different ideas not because they equate to an overall plot i mean movies are only valued for there one story so i don't really see that as a problem in the long run it ends up being ideas (or fresh ideas) that keep a show strong

I don't have any problems with fillers. I just never found American Dragon's fillers (sans a few) to be interesting. They were either average or just lacked the "oomph" for me to appreciate them. In comparison, their more important plot-oriented episodes are just more engaging.

I, too, am so glad that Fillmore made the list and hope that it would be among those to do so. I wish that show lasted longer, although I'm actually partly to blame for it's ending sooner than it could've/should've, since I didn't watch that show when it first aired on ABC. But I'd catch up on some of the episodes later via and courtesy of Youtube and I also wish I checked out this show sooner. Now it's among my favorites as well. Also took me a while to see some episodes of Kim Possible & Phineas and Ferb, and they're both interesting, attention-grabbing shows as well. The two other, remaining shows I didn't follow, Teacher's Pet and The Weekenders, I might try to get into viewing in the future.
