Blog Talkback: Looking Back: The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack

Great review, not as intriguing as the Chowder one, but that's only because it was so interesting reading all the issues Chowder went through whereas Flapjack was pretty solid the entire series. Ah well, I think although Chowder was more popular, Flapjack will ultimately be remembered over Chowder in the end for its unique animation and never ending creativity. :flapjack:

Again, love the retrospect on Flapjack. Agreed with everything and thought it was a great read. Thought it was a great contrast to how it got praises. Despite how Season 2 was lacking because the big guys left, I really only hated 1-2 episodes, and those were the ones where they had to add in the laugh tracks as well, I thought it was a pretty strong season myself. Though for some reason, I didn't mind episodes focusing on the citizens of Stormalong, considering that it did somewhat remind me of what Moral Orel was like when Season 3 came around. As for the art styles, I loved how everyone on the show had one that was different, be it subtle or "Oh yeah! Pen Ward made this." made me appreciate the series even more.

Thanks Flapjack for all the great laughs and enjoying moments. I hope you get a full DVD release.

Wonderful article.

I was pleasantly surprised at Flapjack when I first saw it - I thought at first that it would be a very shallow, disgusting show that wouldn't be worth my time. It got the latter right, but definitely not the former. The visuals are not only interesting (and very diverse), but thoroughly entertaining. It IS disgusting, but it's something I don't hold against because all its gross close-ups and horrifying images are absolutely critical to the charm that is Flapjack. It fits with its dark humor and constant "misadventures" among the cast of characters that I wouldn't have it any other way. It's not "gross" for the sake of "gross"; they actually fit the nature of the show.

I also adore Flapjack, quite possibly one of the cutest, sweetest main protagonist I've seen in a while.

It was a great show. Dang it, CN, I want the whole thing on DVD.

What continues to amaze me about Flapjack is how emotionally attached I got to it. It might just be that Flapjackfan.com was the first forum I ever joined, and the first fandom I was part of, but still. The characters were just so fantastic, and the show went to greater emotional depths then I ever thought possible. Unlike Chowder, for me Flapjack will never be "just another cartoon" but one of the greats, alongside other great shows that got cut off early, like Ren and Stimpy and Invader Zim.

I agree with pretty much everything Chdr said, and all in all it was a great review. However, I have one beef with the article. He said that the Stormalong based stories were necessary, but I disagree. They were slower, less interesting and had less energy then other episodes, and they just weren't as good. With such a limited amount of episodes, they felt like wastes of space. Even comparing the Stormalong based stories of season 1 like Knot Funny or Footburn to the ones from season 2 like Bam! or Fastest Man Alive reveals how little magic was left in the show during those episodes. However, they were just a few episodes. There's no more then 5 'bad' segments to the show, and even those are perfectly watchable. Out of the 46 episodes that aired, I'd say at least 40 were good, and at least 30 made me laugh out loud multiple times. Some shows can go on for 76 episodes but only have a handful of great ones, but it was almost all good times with Flapjack.

Another great article! This time I agree with pretty much every thing, including your favorite episode. That one was actually the one that completely sold the show to me, as before, it was just something to watch when bored. Season 2 was just as good as Season 1 in my opinion. Flapjack, to me, was a show that never really went downhill or uphill. It just stayed at its own level the entire series. That said, Flapjack will always be one of my favorites, and I am sad to see it go.
