Blade Runner - there's two hours of my life I ain't getting back

What a waste of time!

I waited years to see that movie - touted as one of the best movies ever made - only to be left trying to stay awake half-way through.

It contains the most one-dimensional, unmotivated character in history; "Rick, got a job for you. Kill these six replicants."
Two hours later.
"Right. Job done. I'm off for a cuppa."

The blandest storyline ever, and possibly the least engaging love scene ever. You know she's a replicant, so does he. Therefore all his angry love acting is wasted on a scene with no spark.

A classic? In who's book? So very very disappointed.

You're missing the point - I really don't care whether people like the movie or not. Some do, some don't.

And yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion.

But the OP's post is designed purely to wind up the people that do like the movie, in a 'there must be something wrong with you all' fashion, knowing full well that it is a film that is held in high regard by many.

They have no intention of discussing it, and have not come back to rebut any of the people who have given an alternate view to theirs..and that's always the clincher for me.

I agree with you there alright - visually it was indeed stunning on it's own merit and by comparison of the time it was made.

The problem I have there is that Ford's character is one-dimensional and uninteresting, as well as unmotivated. He's just a bloke doing a job, and that's about it. I saw no suggestion - nor any suggestions about the potential implications - that he's a replicant himself. Ford's acting is excellent as per usual but it's a shame they wasted him on a crappy character.

I agree with point 4 but point 5 seems a little confusing.

It's style has been copied loaRAB of times but I've seen more mockery of Blade Runner than I have homage to it.

My problem with it was simply that for a movie pushed as one of the best ever, it was horribly normal, even bad.

You should watch it again in 5 years time or maybe 10.

This film is amazing and I don't think you grasp that "amazing" because you don't see how the characters relate to the plot and the general feel of the film.

12th Doctor I notice you are providing us with a more detailed critique backed up with your reasoning and justification. This is a welcoming contrast to your previous throwaway "2 hours" statement.

Can you call Roy a bonafide villain though. His programming is based upon warfare though and naturally he uses the ability to wage combat to his advantage in order to progress in the search for answers. He does however learn, quite quickly, as befalls an advanced model, about humanity and his last act before dying was to save the life of someone whose job was to "retire" him. Does that make him morally superior to humankind?

I have to agree, I struggled to find anything about this film to keep me watching. I managed about 45 minutes before turning off, I was truly dissappointed. Touted as an amazing film, one of the greatest sci-fi's ever etc. Sorry, but I just didn't see it. Completely over-rated IMHO.

Did you see the version with the voice-over, or without?

Although it's much derided, I prefer it with the voice-over. It helps with the pacing during the slow bits, and it also helps develop Deckard by telling us what he is thinking. "That didn't make me feel any better about shooting a woman in the back" etc.

At one point Rachael asks him if he ever took the test himself. He dreams of a unicorn, and his colleague leaves an origami unicorn outside his apartment, suggesting his dream was pre-programmed, like his memories.

Originally that was about all, and the theory was something developed by fans rather than canon. However, recent edits add effects to the replicant's eyes, including his, so now I think it's official. I think I preferred it when you couldn't tell. That being kinda the point with PKDick.

No, he's the hero, fleshed out when he tells Deckard: "Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave."

Deckard's a puppet, doing the dirty work for Bryant, the police captain(the nearest character to a villain, emphasised in the first version when he refers to replicants as "skinjobs" and is described as the kind of man that used to call black people n*****s), a similar role to that which replicants themselves have been created for. Deckard is shown to be unwilling to hunt the replicants, having to be coerced into doing it.

The OP says that "I saw no suggestion - nor any suggestions about the potential implications - that he's a replicant himself". That suggests he was barely watching the film, as there are several references that hint at it(although only a few in the theatrical cut, but they stand out).

The dialogue is some of the most incisive, mesmeric and memorable seen in film. Just one example:

Roy Batty: Questions.
Lab Worker: I don't know answers, I just do eyes. You Nexus, huh? I design your eyes.
Roy Batty: Chew, if only you could see what I've seen with your eyes

Lastly, the 5 disc tin is quite possibly the greatest object ever made by man's hand. :D

To elaborate on this a little further...because some of us here are of a certain age, there will be movies from our youth that we will hold in high regarRAB that people born in the last 20 years or so may not have seen.

Oft quoted and must discussed examples would be The Godfather movies, The Exorcist, Citizen Kane, 2001 etc.

These movies were made in a different time, and the feel and pace of such movies can often feel very slow compared to modern movies.

And I get that. I don't expect people of todays generation to automatically appreciate the same movies that I did, and would never seek to tell them there is something wrong with them if they cannot appreciate such movies.

But saying you don't like a movie is one thing, drawing attention to yourself with a pathetic thread title obviously designed to provoke a hostile reaction is something else.

Given the trollish vibe you give off in just about every single one of your posts since you (very recently) joined RAB I doubt anyone is actually taking you seriously.
