Blackberry curve custom ringtone help!!!?

I hav a blackberry curve 8530 and have mp3 ringtone creator and use it to make custom ringtones but when i assign them to a contact it will work fine until i put the phone on silent/vibrate. for some reason the ringtone will still play even though i have it set to not. please help i like this phone and don't want to have to switch because of this inconvenience
