Black shirt and purple tie for guy's formal lounge suit?

My brother and I have to go for a relative's wedding this Sunday, and I'm supposed to be looking for an outfit for him.

I've been thinking of a black shirt and black pants paired with a purple tie, what'd you think?
 
Yeah, I agree that wearing pretty much all black to a wedding could be taken as an offence (weddings are ALL about symbolism, especially color symbolism). I like the idea of a bold tie with all black for most other formal type events, though.
How about a charcol grey suit with a vibrant shirt?
