Black Screen on Games after Computer Reformat?

Okay this question is for a friend of mine, he recently had to reformat his computer with discs that did not belong to the computer. He got a virus, and it was his only choice. Once the computer came back up, he wanted to reinstall all of his games. But he had problems, the game would open with a black screen and only few graphics, and no text. There will be a link at the bottom of the page to Photobucket showing you an example.

The reformat discs were to an Alienware laptop. The computer reformatted was a Dell desktop (7-10 years old). The discs reformatted the computer to Windows XP which was the same as before. After having the problems with the black screens, he updated the drivers and software. Problem remained, so he reinstalled the games. Only one game manages to work after re-installation, which is Warcraft 3. Before the reformat and the virus, the games ran fine.

One of the other games, World of Warcraft, has the issue, but I found a temporary solution, which actually worked. He was able to get on fine, but it was running extremely slow. I fear the computer is thinking the graphics card is something different then it really is, but he assures that the graphics card it tells matches. I don't know what else it could be I hope someone out there has a solution, and I will gladly thank you for your time and help!

In advance, thank you for reading and for any help on this matter.
