black level for xbox 360?

i have a 42" toshiba regza model no. 42HL67US, and my xbox 360 elite hooked up to it using hdmi. now i notice that all the presets for the tv make my video games look very dark (gta 4 for example). im curious as to what black level does and if it will help the viusals for my games, if i turn the brightness up on the tv it does make the picture brighter but takes away the picture quality. is there any recommendations as to what i can do to make the picture brighter but at the same time keep the picture quality good?
