Birthplace of modern civilization?

Hello all (:

So, I was recently posed with the question:

The Middle East (Fertile Crescent) is often considered the birthplace of modern civilization. Do you agree or disagree?

Now, I have my own opinions, and the test in which the question was asked was already passed in, so I'm in no way having the Internet do my homework. However, I did think it was an interesting question, and I'd love to hear other people's opinions. Please answer honestly and respect other people's opinions or values.

Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilization, with the early city states of Sumeria preceeding everyone else by at least a thousand years. I do remember reading somewhere about a stone age city in Eastern Europe that may even predate Sumer, but I'd go with Sumer just in case your teacher is hardline on stuff.

yes the place that is thought of as the cradle of civilisation was along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in what would now be Iraq
