Birdstep SmartConnect - Nokia E73

I am trying to use SmartConnect in order to save data charges by having it automatically connect to wifi when in range rather than 3G for push email using Nokia messaging.

I downloaded it from the Ovi store and it appeared to install correctly and restarted the phone. I don't see the program in the applications menu but it is installed and can be seen in the app manager. I even uninstalled/reinstalled with no luck.

Any advice here?

By the way, why is it that push email using nokia messenger has used more data (50mb) in one week for 1 hotmail 1 gmail account than I would use in a month or two on my old e71 using the stock email client? Is this normal?

Did you have to do anything special to get SmartConnect installed? I'm also using an E73, but haven't had any luck with the install. I tried downloading the application through the Ovi store and through BirdStep's website, but in both cases the installer failed with the message, "Unable to install."

no comment on smart connect but for nokia messaging mine has used less than 61mb in a month or so bu thats with attachment downloads and ovi store, and google maps etc.

I'm wondering if it's due to the carrier disabling some feature. Is your E73 unlocked? Seeing that it has happened to at least two of you with the E73, you should check to see if you have the same carrier.

Arrgh. Energy profiler won't install either. Seems to me these programs would work fine on the e73 but probably no one is bothering to take notice of it (including Nokia) and putting it on the list as a supported device because it is exclusive to Tmobile USA afaik.

Mine is unlocked and I am using it on Wind Mobile Canada.

Yep, fails for me, too. Bummer. I hear good things about this app for managing connections (something S60 doesn't seem to do real well).

got smartconnect to work on my e73 simply installed via ovi store. Whats lame is there is no icon for this program so to open it have to go into ovi store and then "my stuff" then launch smartconnect from there. Works great though. Just set that as default access point and now i no longer need to pick access points. :)

there should be an icon for the app. It should be in your applications folder, it looks like a birds footprint (or a peace symbol - minus the circle around it) I've used smartconnect on 3-4 different devices and there was always an icon.

hey i've used smart connect before too.. and I know what the icon looks like. For some reason it dont show up for the e73 as mentioned above in the first post...

It's probably in another folder like Tools or Office.
Try installing Handy Taskman. You can launch it by typing "birdstep" in Handy Taskman.

I've loaded it on my T-Mobile E73 which I use in NYC and have the same issue. I've contacted Birdstep by email and they say they have no way to confirm/deny/fix because they don't have an E73 on which to do testing. I just uninstalled it.

The E73 is a clunker. I own it because I don't want to step up yet to the full smartphone experience which means more expensive handset, contract, expensive data plan, distraction from being present. People in the city walk around like zombies looking at their devices, I'm waiting for the app which lets you see whats in front of you and superimposes your email on top of that...like a HUD..then we won't even be able to see people's faces.

how'd you guys get it installed, anyway? I once got it to download from somewhere (Maybe from Birdstep?), but the install failed. I've never been able to get it to download from Ovi (and I just tried again). It sits at "downloading" with zero progress -- I've let it sit like that for an entire day -- and if I cancel, it won't let me attempt another download until I've restarted the phone.

I agree with the assessment about the E73 being a clunker. There are so many little things wrong with it that firmware updates could fix -- you'd think there would have been a bit more testing. Or maybe some updates. But I think Nokia/T-mobile have abandoned it.

I'm keeping it for the UMA, but if someone manages to extract the web calling feature from the Deny and slip it into an Android app, I'm gonna grab a used MyTouch or something and move on with my life.
